job

i responded to the Craigslist ad: "passive income. no experience required. night work."

she was moving quickly through the house, picking up her jacket, keys.
"it's really simple actually. the babies need to sleep at night, but i need to go out. when they wake up, you'll just put them back to sleep. if you wear one of my sweaters they'll never know the difference."
she whirled around me in circles.

that first night i was anxious, strung tight like a piano string. there must have been five or six of the babies. little bundles in the moonlight.

the woman didn't pay well so i only stayed until the summer. six months at most. i would hold them tight against my chest and look down from the second story window, praying, praying, praying for the morning.
