to further simplify the question, are women the distraction or are they the answer?

A lot of the questions that you ask are case specific. There's a ridiculous amount of factors you have to take into account and then there's plenty of outcomes stemming from each of those factors.

One answer could be that they are indeed the distraction and that only when you have removed it (the distraction, not necessarily the women because it may be possible to train yourself not to be affected by them in that sense [or maybe just remove them completely anyways]) from your life are you able to act, think, and live in the fashion of a free human.

Another way to look at it is that they are the answer. That our lives as males can only be completed with a female present. It could be that we are biologically designed to be unable to function at full capacity without our "better half" in order to insure that our species continues to exist and flourish.

Or it could be that the distraction is the answer. That girls are the vacation from reality we need in order to keep from being completely consumed by the world around us and all the worry/problems/choices that come along with it. Maybe one of the purposes of having a significant other is to allow us a place where we can go to escape the ocean of issues that plague us simply for living and being capable of conscious thought so that we can return to it with a fresh view and see the solutions we missed the last time around.

There's plenty more to write but I've got to pick up the children in 15 minutes.

I understand that the question is a case-specific one, there's no way you're going to answer that one flat out, no black and white, right and wrong. And thats probably true for all questions, but we don't need to go into that.

I think the answer that pleased me the best was this one:

The vapid girls are the distraction, the ones that have nothing to say and nothing to offer. You don't need a body you don't need sex, no matter how much your body tells you you do. That's all distraction. Becoming involved with someone purely for a physical attraction that is a distraction.

But it certainly cannot be that all women are purely carnal distractions (which is something I need to learn) and it is those women with something to say, something to contribute other than beautiful legs or whatever. Those women are the answer. Those women are going to be the ones that start to answer some of the million questions I have circling in my mind.

and I think that goes for all people too, not just women.

Vapid=Bad.
Thinking=Good.

this is what Henry's answer to the question was:

"if you straighten your back, close your eyes, and listen to the finiteness of your breath, you might come upon a self-presence that only thrives on a sense of motion and purpose. otherwise, meaningless thoughts build upon meaningless thought and you sink deeper into your own filth."

a smart man.
